Abstract

Background and Objectives: National and local identities are fundamental dimensions of social identity, and formal education—particularly through social studies—can play a significant role in strengthening them. Methods: This qualitative study aimed to explore the role of social studies education in shaping national and local identity among students in the city of Kermanshah. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 30 students and teachers and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings: Findings indicate that formal education primarily emphasizes national identity through symbols such as the Islamic Revolution, the Iran-Iraq War (Sacred Defense), the national flag, and the national anthem, contributing to an increased sense of national belonging. In contrast, local identity is underrepresented in the curriculum, leading to a weakened sense of local belonging. Key barriers include traditional teaching methods, a lack of locally relevant educational resources, and a rigid national curriculum. Conclusion: The study recommends localizing content, adopting participatory teaching methods, developing indigenous educational materials, and training teachers to address multilayered identities in order to foster a more balanced and sustainable student identity.
