Abstract

Background and Objectives: Reading comprehension strategies have been shown to help students actively engage with reading texts and enhance their comprehension. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of reading strategies on successful and unsuccessful readers’ reading comprehension ability. Methods: For this purpose, 128 EAP students participated in this study. First, a reading strategies questionnaire was given to the participants. Then Nelson Test was used in order to make sure that the participants were homogenous in terms of English language proficiency. They were then given a reading pretest to get the participants’ level of reading ability. After that, the participants were divided into two experimental and two control groups. Later, the treatment was given to the participants in the experimental group. Finally, all the groups sat for the reading posttest. Findings: The statistical analysis showed that the reading strategies instruction had significant impacts on successful readers’ reading ability but not on unsuccessful readers’ reading ability. Conclusion: The current research hopefully brings to attention the significance of incorporating reading comprehension strategies into language teaching curriculum. Pedagogical implications are discussed.
