Abstract

Background and Objectives: Game-based learning is an innovative educational approach that has significant impacts on student learning. The aim of this study is to examine the opportunities and challenges of game-based learning in the educational process of primary education. Methods: This research was conducted using qualitative content analysis, specifically through semi-structured deep interviews with a purposeful sampling technique and snowball sampling among primary school teachers in East Azerbaijan Province who utilize game-based learning methods in their classrooms. Samples were purposefully selected, and the sample size continued until data saturation was reached (18 participants), based on the nature of qualitative research. Findings: The findings indicate that game-based learning enhances the appeal of the learning process, facilitates the understanding of complex concepts, and strengthens students' readiness for real-life situations, while also potentially changing parents' perceptions of education. On the other hand, challenges such as time constraints, lack of resources, and inconsistencies in educational policies are major obstacles to the implementation of this method in schools. Conclusion: Finally, recommendations such as developing teacher training, enhancing school infrastructure, and formulating coordinated policies are proposed to improve and promote game-based learning. This study demonstrates that by overcoming implementation barriers and strengthening structural support, game-based learning can become one of the key tools for improving the quality of education in primary schools.
